Minimally invasive liver surgery—also known as laparoscopic liver surgery or robotic-assisted liver surgery—refers to surgery that is performed with long, thin instruments and tiny cameras to provide a high definition and/or a 3D view of the surgical site for increased precision and dexterity.
What makes minimally-invasive surgery more appealing than open surgery?
With small incisions made to remove the malignant tumour, complex cyst or abscess in the liver, patients can benefit from minimally invasive technology in many ways:
Treatment of primary liver cancer or metastatic liver cancer depends on several factors such as age, general health, the location and extent of the tumour, and includes:
Surgical resection, or removal of the tumour, is recommended for selected liver cancer patients. For patients with end-stage liver diseases, acute liver failure and selected cases of primary liver cancer, the accepted standard of care is liver transplantation, which replaces a patient’s diseased liver with a new healthy liver either partially (live donor) or whole (cadaveric donor).
As part of our efforts to achieve early recovery for patients undergoing major surgery, Surgical Associates works closely with allied health professionals and specialist nurses to implement the following protocols before, during and after surgery:
